Animals in The Sims 4

There are six types of Animals in Cottage Living:

  • Chickens
  • Cows
  • Llamas
  • Rabbits
  • Birds
  • Foxes

Cows and Llamas are kept in an Animal Shed, whereas Chickens are in a Chicken Coop. Rabbits and Birds are wild so your Sim cannot keep and raise them, but they will return to visit and your Sim can build a relationship with them for various perks. More on this below.

How to Buy Animals

Buying Cows and Llamas

To buy Cows and Llamas, you need to purchase an Animal Shed and place it outside on your Sim's property. You can find it in Build/Buy Mode under the "Outdoor Activities" section for §500.

Once it's placed, click on the Animal Shed and choose "Purchase Animal" to make the buy menu pop up. From here, you can pick either a Beige Llama (§350), White Llama (§350), Brown Cow (§400), or Spotted Cow (§400).

You can only house one Animal in an Animal Shed so you'll need to own more than one if you want multiple Cows or Llamas at one time.

Buying Chickens

advertisement

To purchase Chickens, you need to buy a Chicken Coop and place it outdoors on your Sim's property. It is listed under "Outdoor Activities" in Build/Buy Mode and costs §400.

After the Chicken Coop is placed outside, click on it and then on "Purchase Chickens" which will bring up the buy menu. You can own eight Chickens at a time and there are eight types to choose from: Black Hen (§150), Black Rooster (§200), Brown Hen (§150), Brown Rooster (§200), Hen Chick (§75), Rooster Chick (§100), White Hen (§150), and White Rooster (§200).

Keeping Animals Happy

It is very important that your Sim keeps their Animals happy otherwise they will leave for greener pastures and seek out a new life where they're treated better.

To check an Animal's happiness and overall status including age, hygiene, hunger, and attention, simply hover your cursor over them.

Cleaning

advertisement

To keep your Sim's Chickens, Cows, and Llamas happy, they need to first ensure that their housing is kept clean and disinfected daily. You can check the cleanliness status of an Animal Shed or Coop by hovering over it. If it's Slighty Dirty, Dirty, or Very Dirty, it needs cleaning. To clean it, click on the building and then select "Clean Animal Shed" or "Clean Coop."

When cleaning a Coop or Animal Shed, your Sim will sometimes find Fertilizer that is used when growing Oversized Crops. Check out our Oversized Crops guide for more information.

Keeping your Sim's Animals' enclosures clean isn't all, though, as they also need to make sure the Animals themselves are clean and well-kept. You can tell if an Animal is dirty by hovering over them and checking their status and they'll also look dirtier in appearance as well.

To clean Cows and Llamas, click on one and select "Clean Cow" or "Clean Llama." For Chickens, they'll automatically be cleaned if it rains or if they're under a sprinkler and your Sim can also teach them to preen themselves if they have a good relationship with them by choosing the "Teach How to Preen" conversation option.

Feeding

Your Sim will also need to keep their Animals fed. They can either feed an Animal directly for §4 by clicking on it and then on "Feed Animal" or you can feed them over time.

advertisement

For Cows and Llamas, click on the Animal Shed and then on "Refill Feed" to fill their feed box up for §10. This lasts a few days meaning you don't need to worry about feeding them every single day.

Chickens, on the other hand, require scatter feeding daily otherwise they will starve. To do this, click on the Coop and then on "Scatter Feed Nearby" to make your Sim drop piles of food on the ground for them to eat for §4. Depending on how many Chickens you have in that Coop, your Sim may need to do this twice.

If your Animals go without food, their overall happiness will decrease so you need to ensure your Sim stays on top of feedings. Upgrades can help with this, but more on this later.

Socializing

It is also important for your Sim to pay attention to their Animals and to socialize with them daily. Not only will this fill the Animals' attention need, but it will also raise the Friendship level between your Sim and them.

A better relationship means higher quality harvestables and produce such as Wool and Eggs, and it can also help you win if you enter them into Finchwick Fair (take a look at our Finchwick Fair guide for more details on this).

advertisement

To socialize with an Animal, click on it and then on the "Socialize" option. This will bring up static interactions like "Hug" and "Pet" and also interactions based on your Sim's mood. For example, when Tense, your Sim can ask their Llama to help them calm down.

If your Animals go without attention, their overall happiness will decrease so you need to ensure your Sim stays on top of socializing with their Animals.

Animal Treats

Animal Treats are food items that you can feed Cows, Llamas, and Chickens to influence their behavior, produce type, and more. You can purchase them from the Grocery Shop in the Finchwick district of Henford-on-Bagley or win them by participating in Finchwick Fair.

Some Animal Treats change an Animal's coat color, so you can switch your Sim's Cow to a Rainbow Cow or their Chicken to a Gold Chicken, for example.

advertisement

To unlock the recipe for an Animal Treat so your Sim can make it at home, first purchase it and then make your Sim feed it to one of their Animals. This will automatically unlock the recipe. To make Animal Treats, click on your Sim's fridge and select "Create Animal Treats."

Animal Shed and Coop Upgrades

Your Sim can upgrade their Animal Shed and Chicken Coop using Livestock Upgrade Parts. There are multiple types of upgrades, each with its own perk, but you can only have one upgrade on a building at one time.

To upgrade an Animal Shed or Coop, click on it and then on "Actions" > "Upgrade" and the list of upgrades for that building will pop up. If you hover over an option, it will show you how many Livestock Upgrade Parts are needed.

There are two upgrades available for the Animal Shed:

List of All 2 Animal Shed Upgrades and Effects
Upgrade Effect Upgrade Parts Needed
ComfortCare Life Extender Extends Cow/Llama's lifespan 3 Livestock Upgrade Parts
Livestock Auto Feeder Automatically refills Animal Shed's feed forever 6 Livestock Upgrade Parts

There are three upgrades available for the Chicken Coop:

Upgrade Effects Upgrade Parts Needed
ComfortCare Life Extender Extends Chickens' lifespan 2 Livestock Upgrade Parts
Livestock Auto Feeder Automatically scatters feed forever 6 Livestock Upgrade Parts
Fox-Be-Gone Alarm Prevents Foxes from attacking the Coop 3 Upgrade Parts

How to Get Livestock Upgrade Parts

To obtain Livestock Upgrade Parts, your Sim needs to run Errands for other Sims in Henford-on-Bagley. To run an Errand, interact with an NPC in the World and click "Offer Help With Errands" under the Friendly conversation menu. Your Sim can accept up to three at any one time.

Errands range from giving the Sim an item to request to planting a specific type of crop. Each one offers its own rewards, and you'll want to choose ones that give a Livestock Upgrade Part upon completion.

Check out our Errands guide for more information about Errands, including how many there are, rewards, and more.

Animal Produce

Hens, Cows, and Llamas all generate produce that your Sim can collect and use for a variety of purposes including Cross-Stitch, Cooking, and submitting to Finchwick Fair. There are three types of produce: Eggs, Milk, and Wool.

Eggs

Adult Hens lay Eggs automatically in their Coop, which you can click on and collect by selecting "Collect Eggs." Normal Eggs are the standard Eggs laid by Hens, but you can get them to lay different colored ones if you give them specific Animal Treats. See the Animal Treats section of this guide for more details.

If you have a Rooster in the Coop as well, your Sim's Hen can also lay Hatchable Eggs which will hatch into a Chick after a few days. To make a Hatchable Egg hatch, click on it in your Sim's inventory and then on "Incubate Egg." They'll then place it back into the Chicken Coop where the Hen will sit on it. Once it's ready to hatch, click on the Egg and select "Hatch Egg."

The happier your Hen is, the higher quality the Eggs they lay will be. A high Friendship level is also important to get the best quality. High-quality Eggs sell for more and also increase your Sim's chance of winning if they enter one into the Finchwick Fair Chicken contest.

advertisement

Milk

Your Sim can milk their Cow to get Milk that can be sold, used in Cooking, or to be submitted into the Finchwick Fair Cow contest. They can be milked at any age to get Normal Milk and, like Chickens, the flavor and type of the Milk can be influenced by Animal Treats. Rarer Milk flavors also help your Sim to rank higher if entered into Finchwick Fair so it's worth playing around with Animal Treats.

To milk a Cow, click on it > "More Choices" > "Milk Brown Cow." Your Sim can only milk the same Cow twice a day and if their relationship and happiness isn't high, there's a chance the Animal will kick the bucket over.

The happiness of your Sim's Cow and how good their Relationship is also has an effect on the quality of the Milk it will produce. Ensure that its Animal Shed is kept clean and stocked with food and that your Sim cleans and socializes with it often to get the best Milk quality possible.

Wool

Llamas produce Wool which your Sim can shear off and use to make Cross-Stitches, give as gifts, and offer to the Creature Keeper for Animal Clothes. Take a look at our Animal Clothes guide for more information on the Creature Keeper, including his location and the Animal Clothes he sells.

advertisement

To shear a Llama, click on it > "More Choices" > "Shear Llama's Wool." You can only shear the same Llama every so often and if their relationship and happiness aren't high enough, there's a chance it will kick your Sim when they try to shear it, causing the action to fail.

The happiness of your Sim's Llama and how good their Relationship is also has an effect on the quality of the Wool it will produce. Ensure that its Animal Shed is kept clean and stocked with food and that your Sim cleans and socializes with it often to get the bes t Wool quality possible.

The Wool color changes depending on the coat color of the Llama, which is influenced by certain Animal Treats.

Wild Animals

Outside of the three Animal types your Sim can own, there are two Wild Animals that they can interact with and build a relationship with for specific perks: Rabbits and Birds.

Rabbits

advertisement

Rabbits can be found all over Henford-on-Bagley and can even show up outside your Sim's house from time to time. Their appearances are random though, so for a guaranteed way to find them, head to the Isle of Volpe Park in the Bramblewood district.

Once at the park, look for a tree stump called a Wild Rabbit Home. Here, your Sim can coax one out of the stump if they're not already outside of it.

Your Sim can build up a Friendship with a Rabbit by socializing with it and giving it gifts. Once your Sim has befriended a Rabbit for the first time, you will unlock the Wild Rabbit Home in Build/Buy Mode so your Sim can have Wild Rabbits on their property at all times. Rabbits can also give your Sim gifts.

Befriending a Rabbit also unlocks the option to Ask for Gardening Help. This makes the Animal eat any weeds that appear around crops, and also fertilizes the soil for Oversized Crops.

Like Cows, Llamas, and Chickens, you can also dress a Rabbit in clothes that are purchased from the Creature Keeper in the Bramblewood neighborhood.

Birds

advertisement

Unlike Rabbits who can show up randomly at your Sim's house, Birds are only found in specific tree stumps. There is one just outside of the Ruins in the Bramblewood neighborhood of Henford-on-Bagley. You'll know it's the right one if you hover over it and it says "Flock of Wild Birds."

Birds can be tricky to socialize with to begin with so it is recommended that you "Watch" them from afar until your Sim's Friendship bar with them reaches around a third filled. From here, your Sim should be able to befriend them successfully. "Show Affection" and "Sing to Birds" are the best options to build up a relationship. Once your Sim has befriended a Flock of Wild Birds for the first time, you will unlock the Flock of Wild Birds tree stump in Build/Buy Mode so your Sim can have Birds on their property at all times.

Like Rabbits, Birds can help your Sim with their crops. Simply click on the tree stump > "Ask For Gardening Help." This makes them eat bugs attempting to sabotage your crops and they can also sing to Oversized Crops to encourage growth. They can also give your Sim gifts if the Friendship level is high enough.

Foxes

Foxes show up randomly around the World of Henford-on-Bagley and will appear on your Sim's property if they own Animals. They are dangerous if you own Chickens because they can not only attack them but steal their Eggs as well. They can also hurt Wild Rabbits too. Luckily, you can protect your Chickens by upgrading their Coop (see the Livestock Upgrade Part section) with a Fox alarm to warn them off.

Unlike Rabbits and Birds, there are no perks to befriending Foxes so unless you are a big Fox fan, it's not worth building up a Friendship Level. The only cool thing your Sim can do with a Fox is dress it in Animal Clothing.
